Each door measures approximatley 10 inches wide by 20 inches high.The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of Mali, south of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara in the Mopti region. The population numbers between 400,000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their mythology, their mask dances, wooden sculpture and their architecture. These doors protected the window-like opening into each family's grain storage building, and used a simple sliding door lock. Primordial beings, ancestors, Kanaga masks, sun lizards and scenes of life symbolically served to protect the entrance by making it sacrosanct

- - - - - - - - - | Gothic water god iron sculpture from Samuel Yellin collection Item # 7426 Click HERE to inquire about this item Rare and important Italian 14th century iron sculpture of a mythological figure holding a snake (water god) from the Samuel Yellin collection. This very early European sculpture was documented in the catalog (page 16) for the "Made of Iron" exhibit held at the University of St Thomas Art Department, in Houston, TX, in 1966. Pieces were loaned to this exhibit by many important collectors and institutions, including among others J D Rockefeller lll and the New York Historical Society. Noted Philadelphia, PA, metal artist Samuel Yellin collected fine and rare examples of ironwork. He donated several pieces to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which are in its permanent collection. This is a museum quality example of Gothic period sculpture. It measures 6 inches high. The top is carved out of one solid block of rosewood. It retains all of its original solid cast brass fittings. There are some age cracks in the lid, a few missing molding tacks and a break at the top of the lock face. It measures 13.25 inches wide by 10.25 inches deep by 9 inches high.
